The fish of 10,000 casts deserves a good weight estimate. This muskie length-to-weight chart gives average weights by length so you can size up your musky before the release.

Muskie length-to-weight chart

LengthAverage weight
30″7.3 lb
32″8.86 lb
34″10.62 lb
36″12.61 lb
38″14.83 lb
40″17.3 lb

48″29.89 lb
50″33.78 lb
52″38 lb

These values use weight (lb) = length cubed divided by 3,700 (length in inches), which matches the classic guideline of a 42-inch muskie near 20 lb and a 48-inch fish around 30 lb.

Why your fish may weigh more or less

A chart can only show an average, because two muskie of the same length can differ in weight by 20% or more. A pre-spawn female, a fish fattened on a rich food supply, or simply a deep-bodied individual will all weigh more than the table suggests. Water temperature, season, and region matter too, which is why girth — the distance around the fish at its fattest point — is the single best predictor of true weight.
