Ice thickness safety guidelines
These are the widely published minimums for new, clear, hard ice. Add a healthy margin, and remember that thickness can vary a lot across the same body of water.

White, cloudy, slushy, or refrozen ice can be only about half as strong as clear ice — treat it far more cautiously, or stay off it entirely.
Ice safety tips
- Never head out alone on early or late-season ice, and tell someone your plans.
- Carry a set of ice picks around your neck and a length of rope to help in a self-rescue.
- Check thickness with a spud bar or auger every so often as you move — don’t assume it’s uniform.
- Avoid current, inlets and outlets, pressure ridges, cracks, and dark or discolored spots, which are all weaker.
- Wear a float suit or life jacket on questionable ice.
When in doubt, stay off
